SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Blue Eagles defeated the Carolina Stingers in game 1 of a doubleheader 9-4 Saturday night at Switzer Stadium in Spartanburg South Carolina.

The Blue Eagles pounded out 12 hits in route to the 9-4 victory, and newly acquired second baseman Josh Pless (Citadel) led the way. A day after hitting a homerun in his debut as a Blue Eagle, Pless went three for four, driving in one RBI and scoring run one to lead the Blue Eagles to victory.

The Blue Eagles fell behind early as the Stingers jumped on starting pitcher and former Dorman standout David Parry (Brigham Young University) scoring four runs in the first inning. Parry had problems finding his control in the first, but settled down as the game progressed. Parry finished the day throwing 4.0 innings, giving up four runs, all which were earned, off of four hits. Parry left the game trailing 4-2 for reliever Ryan Traylor (Wofford) in the top half of the fifth.

Traylor held the Stingers to just two hits through three innings pitched, not allowing them to score any runs. Traylor’s scoreless relief earned him his second win of the year as the Blue Eagles were able to come from behind to score five runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to claim the 9-4 victory.

Catcher Dylan Cole (Furman) went 2-4 on the afternoon with two RBI’s. Cole biggest plate appearance came in the bottom half of the fifth when the Stingers decided to walk switch hitting first baseman Jesse Dunn to load the bases to face the right handed Cole. Cole lined a first pitch fastball to right that scored two runs and gave the Blue Eagles a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish.

Jeff Howell was the losing pitcher for the Stingers as he pitched 4.1 innings and seven runs of off 10 hits. Howell’s record fell to 1-1 on the season.

Game 2 of the doubleheader between the Stingers and Blue Eagles will begin at approximately 7:55pm.
