Web Posted June 16, 2010
David Parry (BYU) and a string of relievers limited the Statesville Owls to 4 hits Wednesday night as the Spartanburg Blue Eagles (9-5) defeated the Statesville Owls (6-8) 4-2 in Statesville North Carolina.
Parry was the winning pitcher on the evening as he moved to 1-1 on the summer. Parry struggled in the early innings with his control as he hit three batters in the first three innings, but settled down as the evening progressed. Parry threw five innings, allowed one run, two hits, and hit four Owls before he was taken out of the game.
Dylan Cole (Furman) doubled in two runs in the first inning to give the Blue Eagles a 2-0 lead. Spartanburg held a 2-1 lead when Parry departed the game and the Blue Eagle pen did the rest of the work, limiting the Owls to two hits through the remaining four innings of the game. The Owls used four pitchers to pitch the four innings with each reliever working one inning apiece.
Closer Chris Knauff (USC-Upstate) entered the game in the ninth inning and struck out the side to record his fifth save of the season.
Gaither Bumgardner (USC-Upstate) also had two hits and one RBI for the Blue Eagles.
