SPARTANBURG,
S.C. - The Spartanburg Blue Eagles (15-12) defeated the Asheville Redbirds (11-16) 9-4 Friday night at T.C. Roberson field to win game one of a doubleheader.
Gus White allowed one earned run through five innings, while Jaren Sustar drove in four runs at the plate to lead the Blue Eagles to their third consecutive victory over the Redbirds in five days.
White scattered six hits and struck out two Redbirds to earn his first win and move to 1-2 on the summer.
The Blue Eagles gave White some early run support when in the top of third inning when third baseman Jaren Sustar belted a three run homer over the left field fence. The Blue Eagles continued to build on their lead as they scored one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and three in seventh which was more than enough for the Blue Eagle bullpen to secure to lead and get a victory.
The closest the Redbirds came was in the bottom half of the sixth inning when they scored three runs off Blue Eagle reliever Anthony Rowland to cut the lead to 6-4.
However, Mike Connolly came in and pitched the remaining 1 and 2/3 innings of the game, allowing only two Redbirds to reach. Connolly earned his first save as a Blue Eagle.
Game two of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 7:55pm
